Resistance to the induction of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis: A tool for studying pathogenesis of the central nervous system autoimmunity

Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is the recognized model of multiple sclerosis (MS), human autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS). The model is developed in various primate and rodent species, while the most extensive studies have been performed with mice and rats. Importantly, it has been shown that inbred rodent strains vary greatly regarding susceptibility to the induction of EAE, the difference ranging from almost complete resistance to extremely high susceptibility. Therefore, investigating molecular and cellular basis of the observed difference has provided valuable results about genetic predisposition to the development of CNS autoimmunity. This review presents data on the pathogenesis of EAE that have accumulated thanks to the investigation of inbred rat and mice strains.
